‘Born of Freedom, Bound by Blood’ documentary released

Most Americans know what happened on Juneteenth. This is the story of what happened after. For many Americans, the story ends on June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free. Emancipation was not the end of the story.

It was the beginning.

“Born of Freedom, Bound by Blood” follows the journey of one American family, the descendants of Eliza and Emanuel Armstrong, across generations from the aftermath of slavery and Reconstruction, through migration, perseverance, education, military service, entrepreneurship, and community leadership, to a modern-day family reunion in Colorado Springs.

Through family photographs, historical records, interviews, and the voices of descendants, the film explores how freedom created new possibilities and how those opportunities shaped the lives of the Armstrong family.

Their story reflects a larger American story of resilience, determination, and the enduring power of family. As relatives gather to reconnect, share memories, and honor their ancestors, they discover that history is not confined to textbooks or museums.

It lives in stories passed from one generation to the next. “Born of Freedom, Bound by Blood” reminds us that Juneteenth is about the past and the families who carried freedom forward.
